Boston drinks like a port city that never stopped shucking. The local pour is a tray of oysters, a Massachusetts-brewed lager, and — near Fenway — a taco and a house marg. The Seaport, Back Bay, and Fenway each pour one corner of it.

Oysters are the baseline

Massachusetts brewers organized as the Massachusetts Brewers Guild back in 2007, and today the state counts more than 200 operating breweries — but the harbor sets the food. Legal Sea Foods Harborside on Northern Avenue posts Happy Hour at the bar 3PM–6PM daily: $1 oysters, 50¢ littleneck clams, $2 shrimp cocktail, and $9 bar bites. In Back Bay, Earls Prudential posts Happy Hour lounge + patio exclusive Monday–Friday 3–6pm and Sunday–Thursday 9pm–close, with oyster on the half shell 3.5 and Baja fish taco 7 on the priced plate list. Between the two, nobody in this town pays full price for a bivalve before 6.

Fenway runs on tacos and $5 beers

Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar Fenway on Brookline Avenue posts Monday–Friday 4 PM–6 PM with $4 tacos, $5 beers, $8 house margs, street corn $7, nachos $8, and $6 house wines. It is the pregame room: cheap tacos, cold beer, raw bar specials on the side. The big-beer backdrop is local too — Samuel Adams sits on the Guild's statewide brewery roll, so the draft behind the $5 line is often brewed a few miles away.

The South End tapas hour

Estragon Tapas on Harrison Avenue posts $6 Tapas Happy Hour Monday–Thursday 5:00 PM–7:00 PM in the lounge or at the bar — gambas al ajillo, croquetas de jamón, and pisto manchego at one price. It is the Spain-to-Seaport bridge: sherry logic, small plates, first-come seats.

How to drink it like a local

  • 3pm: $1 oysters at Legal Harborside, daily 3–6 at the bar.
  • 4pm: $4 tacos and $5 beers at Loco Fenway (Mon–Fri 4–6).
  • 5pm: $6 tapas at Estragon (Mon–Thu 5–7), then the late window at Earls from 9.
